Anastrozole vs Enclomiphene differences and Side Effects

With the numerous testosterone formulations that exist and are being developed, patients have a variety of options to choose from, depending on their preferences. Additionally, there are a number of non-testosterone alternative therapies too that can be considered, particularly in men desiring fertility or wishing to avoid specific side effects of testosterone therapy. Nasal and buccal testosterone preparations are also available for the treatment of hypogonadism and may be useful in limited clinical settings where other testosterone preparations are not effective or appropriate. Notably, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently added Oxymetholone important warnings to testosterone products. However, until additional information becomes available, the current recommendation is that clinicians in practice should discuss these potential risks with all patients when starting or continuing testosterone replacement therapy6,7.

Tamoxifen is another oral medication and a type of selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). Research has shown that treatment with tamoxifen only resulted in a marginal decrease in glandular tissue. Complications recorded during the use of tamoxifen include nausea, fatigue, headaches, skin rash, weight gain, hair loss, and erectile dysfunction. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland are both necessary for the production of an ample amount of testosterone. However, to control the release of these hormones, an adequate among of estrogen is required. When estrogen levels get too high when undergoing testosterone replacement therapy, the GnRH and LH can be blocked or severely limited, which will, in turn, limit the amount of testosterone being produced.

Our mission: Ending cancer for life.

  • “If you have high estrogen levels and are experiencing symptoms such as gynecomastia (man boobs), despite having healthy testosterone levels, anastrozole might be a great treatment option,” Staheli explains.
  • The reduction in estrogen levels by anastrozole can affect the balance between estrogen and testosterone.
  • These men are typically using anabolic steroids to improve muscle mass and body image.
  • Cardiovascular aerobic activity is one of the fastest ways to burn calories and involves any exercise that elevates the heart rate.

Gynecomastia is also referred to as man boobs or moobs and is a complex physiological condition. The most effective and permanent solution is gynecomastia surgery to remove the excess glandular tissue and subcutaneous fat from the chest. On occasion, non-surgical options and medications may offer a solution. However, medication will normally only provide a temporary fix and gynecomastia will usually return if treatment is discontinued. The growth of many cancers of the breast is stimulated or maintained by estrogens. Anastrozole lowers estrogen levels by preventing the synthesis of estrogen from adrenal androgens (primarily androstenedione and testosterone).

Does Arimidex raise testosterone?

Although testosterone induces growth velocity, the estrogens aromatized from testosterone will accelerate epiphysial maturation and for that reason reduce adult height further. The combination of testosterone and letrozole, therefore, was tested in boys with constitutional delay of puberty. This combination treatment effectively increased growth velocity but epiphysial maturation was slower in the letrozole-treated group, leading to a significant increase in predicted adult height 64,65. On the other hand, several, mostly familial cases of aromatase excess have been reported. The clinical picture consists of gynecomastia, accelerated growth and premature bone maturation due to excessive peripheral estrogen synthesis. Stratakis et al. 25 described a family with aromatase excess syndrome in which the syndrome appeared to be caused by inappropriately high expression of an alternative first exon.

As you get older, your levels of testosterone begin to drop and the levels of estrogen begin to rise which can lead to unwanted symptoms. Some other causes for rising estrogen levels are stress, weight gain, and testosterone replacement therapy. Men using anabolic steroids may be deficient in ITT concentrations required to sustain spermatogenesis even though they may have serum androgen concentrations that are between normal and high. Many males who use anabolic steroids acquire hypogonadotropic hypogonadism along with an ensuing atrophy of the testes.

Increased cholesterol

Instead, an enzyme called Aromatase converts testosterone into estradiol, a potent estrogen. Well, guess what; Estradiol excess has been linked to prostate cancer in more recent studies like this one. This is just one possible effect of increased estradiol levels in men. Many others can occur, and this is why testosterone patients at Innovative Men’s Clinic take the aromatase inhibitor, Anastrozole (Arimidex).

Women with breast cancer usually only have anastrozole when they are post menopausal. Other side effects, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lymphedema, and osteoporosis (brittle bones) take much longer (months to years) to develop and may be hard to notice, but your doctor will monitor you for these. For the purpose of Gynecomastia control and general on-cycle Estrogen control, Arimidex is to be used at a general range of 0.5 – 1mg per day, and can be adjusted depending on the user’s tolerance and reaction to the compound. Everyone should adjust their Arimidex dosage according to their individual response. It is not uncommon for 0.5mg/day to even be too much (or too little) for some.
